The Penelopiad - Margaret Atwood--An amazing testament to Homer's original, this witty piece of Classical reception transforms a somewhat sexist and outdated narrative into one of humour and a more sensitive discussion of the role of women in epic. The choice to use Penelope and develop her narrative significantly is innovative and turns the original on its head. This is most obvious when Atwood questions the reports of Odysseus' acts of heroism abroad, for example insinuating that rather than staying with the goddess Circe, he might have merely been entertaining the maiden of a luxury whorehouse. I shan't continue and spoil the book, but I would highly recommend! Especially for anyone interested in Classics or the study of reception!-- #bookgram #bookloversfollowloop #bookstagrammademedoit #bookclub #booksofig #bookeditor #bookishquotes #bookporn #readingtime #read #thepenelopiad #margaretatwood

Here are some books on my tbr! I’m going to be honest I’m sort of in a reading slump at the moment and I’m having a difficult time picking up a book. This has however no effect on my ability to keep adding books to my tbr! The books in the pictures: 1. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. This story follows Penelope, the wife of Odysseus as she tells the story of the famous myth of the Odyssey alongside her twelve maids. 2. The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue by V.E. Schwab. “A life no one will remember. A story you will never forget.” In 1714 Addie La Rue makes a desperate bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by anyone who crosses her path. Nearly 300 years later Addie stumbles across a man in a bookstore who remembers her name. 3. Those Who Prey by Jennifer Moffett. College life isn’t what Emily expected. Instead of walking in the halls with her friends,Emily walks alone. Vulnerable and desperate for friends she joins an exclusive on-campus group called Kingdom that offers her the whole college experience and more. But the Kingdom’s practices become increasingly dangerous and when someone ends up dead Emily is forced to question how far she is willing to go in order to belong. -------------------- #bookstagram #booklover #tbr #bookstagrammer #booknerd #bookstoread #toberead #bookaddict #bookrecommendations #goodreads #thepenelopiad #theodyssey #greekmythology #greekmyth #theinvisiblelifeofaddielarue #thosewhoprey #cultstory #cult #veschwab #margaretatwood #jennifermoffett #bookworm

This was recommended to me by a teenage girl, a friend’s daughter. Smarty, that one! Slim little folly taken from the perspective of Odysseus’s wife Penelope. Well-written, of course, duh this is @therealmargaretatwood. #margaretatwood #readmoretalkless #readmorebooks #odysseuspenelope #twistinclassic #thepenelopiad #greekmythology #booksofinstagram📚

"Those of you who may catch the odd whisper, the odd squeak, so easily mistake my words for breezes rustling the dry reeds, for bars at twilight, for bad dreams."4/5 starsI initially picked up 'The Penelopiad' by Margret Atwood for my postmodern English task - it is really such a good book for postmodernism. However, I feel every girl and woman should read this novel, it's takes a very interesting take on the idea of feminism - Penelope afterall only starts rebelling once she is dead, and what I mean by rebelling is speaking out. Atwood really shows the importance of rewriting, retelling, how it seems like Homer's 'The Odyssey' is a piece of factual fiction which is set in stone just like a textbook. Yet, these myths - these stories - are ones passed on by word of mouth, and everyone has variations when telling a story rather than reading it. 'The Penelopiad' shows the story of The Odyssey in a refreshing manner which I cannot help but think about - the story of the twelve maids seems to haunt me even now. “What can a woman do when scandalous gossip travels the world? If she defends herself, she sounds guilty. So I waited some more.”I’ve wanted to read this book for a while, especially after a professor recommended it and now I’ve finally picked it up. It is quite thin, so it doesn’t take a long time to read it. I found it really interesting to hear a different perspective of the events of the Odyssey. The story is told by Penelope the wife of Odysseus and the twelve maids. It was interesting to see the differences between these two narratives, because even though both are from the perspective of a women/ twelve women it is quite different. I enjoyed the writing style a lot and finished the book in one afternoon. #thepenelopiad #margaretatwood #margaretatwoodquote #odyssey #penelopeandodysseus #thepenelopiadquote #booksandoutfits

THE PENELOPIAD~ By Margaret Atwood ☆☆☆/5 .................................................... Margaret Atwood has created an intriguing and fascinating spin on the story of Penelope and Odysseus; written from Penelope's perspective, she tells a tragic and gory story of betrayal, disloyalty and grim death. Atwood's writing is poetic and scintillating and the poetry scattered between the stories relates an air of sophisticated grace through the pages of horror. As our main heroine, Penelope, wanders through the fields of Asphodel, she recounts the hidden story behind the twelve maids that were cruelly strung up and hung by the hands of her husband and son. Killed for a crime they did not commit, they follow Odysseus  and haunt his every step. Why did they have to die? Was it the fact they were women, born in a time of cruelty and harsh unfairness to the finer sex? Or was it simply a careless act of a vain man; a man who felt the need to purge his halls of the scandalous memories he had brought upon it by his own adulterous actions. (TRIGGER WARNING: The book does contain graphic language and depicts scenes of violence and abuse. ) #margaretatwood #thehandsmaidstale #atwood #thepenelopiad #greekmythology #greekliterature #greeknovels #battleoftroy #helenandparis #penelopeandodysseus #odysseus #fantasyseries #mythology #mythsandlegends #bibliophile #booklover #bookaesthetic #readersofinsta #fantasybooks #fictionbooks #fictional #bookreview #grecianmythology #greece #bookphotography #review #fictional #loveofbooks #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #booktok

Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.Margaret Atwood, The Penelopiad #margaretatwood #margaretatwoodquote #thepenelopiad #adventureswithteddy #natureplay #adventureday #betterthananytoy #nofilter

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood 🏺🌊💧🧜🏽‍♀️A modern retelling of The Odyssey from the viewpoint of Penelope and her twelve hanged maids. It was a good read and another example of women having to prove their virtue to the men. Similar stories can be found in Hindu mythology. 🤦🏽‍♀️If you liked reading Circe or Silence of the Girls, then I think you’ll like this too. ..... #thepenelopiad #margaretatwood #theodyssey #homer #greekmythology #mythsandlegends #herstory #bookrecommendations #retelling #booksofinstagram #femaleperspective #Greece #ithaca #canongate #ancientmysteries
